RSS is an acronym for both RdfSiteSummary and ReallySimpleSyndication. The history of RSS covers several periods:
-
prior to March 1999 -- development of technologies used in RSS
-
March 1999 to July 1999 -- RDF Site Summary 0.9
-
July 1999 to Late 1999 -- Rich Site Summary 0.91, Netscape leaves the scene
-
Late 1999 to August 2000 -- Discussion of RSS direction and technology, namespaces proposal, some RDF discussion
-
August 2000 to September 2002 -- RDF Site Summary 1.0, start of the "RSS flamewar", RSS 0.92, 0.93, and 0.94
-
September 2002 to now -- Really Simple Syndication 2.0 (RSS 0.91 with namespaces), transfer of RSS 2.0 to Berkman
As of August 2000 there are the two branches, variants, flavors, formats, or forks of RSS: RdfSiteSummary (RSS 1.0) and ReallySimpleSyndication (RSS 2.0).
