ProjectNameProcess needs to resolved before names are proposed again.

[GaryF] I can tell you right now that none of the names currently on this page are going to be anymore successful than the likes of Loki and Elbo. Give up on the weird quirky names (Phaistos, Kitak, Nota, PubZinc etc). In the real world, they don't stand a chance.
-
[AdamKinney] Thanks for thought Gary, but I think we were just trying to follow the guidelines. For example, Make it unique, memorable. and Quirkiness, substance encouraged. I think something like Content Feed or Thoughts Via XML would be hard to remember. Names like Perl and Unix were acronyms turned into words, quirky words. Something new and undefined is easier to give an identity.
-
[CyrilFievet] I agree with Adam. After all, the name is not that important. It just has to follow the guidelines (and to be cool). But that will be the project in itself that will give the name its importance, personality and fame - not the contrary. Am I the only one to consider that postponing the final choice of a name, for a project which is already known by 4 or 5 different names, is not the best thing that could happen?
-
[DirkHaun] Gary, one of the reasons for coming up with what you call "quirky words" is that trying to invent new names reduces the risk of trademark issues that have plagued many of the previous suggestions.
-
[TomasJogin] Exactly.
-
[GaryF] While it would reduce the risk of trademark issues (Great!) and follows the guidelines to get accepted, I think the last round of voting and proposals showed that those names that were quirky got little votes or got slated at the proposal stage. To say the name is not that important is absolutely absurd. The amount of discussions and delays going on show that the name is VERY important to many people. Personally, I like some of the quirky names. But, realistically, they don't stand a chance of consensus.
-
[SingingBanzo] I think now we have a bunch of very much better options that last round. =)
-
[CyrilFievet] Of course the name is important, Gary. What I wanted to say is just that IMHO, it's still more important to find it quickly. I also think that many great names were not supposed to be great names in the first place, but have become so. Who would have chosen "Yahoo" for a Web directory, or "Apple" for a computer brand, or "Amazon" for a bookstore? I think we just have to pick a name that fits the guidelines, define a good universal format, and spread the world. If the project is good, the name will be. Not the contrary.
-
[SingingBanzo] There was an little change in the status of the Trademark PIE: 2003-08-18 - Abandonment - No use statement filed. Does this mean we can use it??
-
[AdamKinney] So what do we do now? I've looked at the first round of project name proposals, and there are 246 possible names listed. How can you vote out of 246 candidates? That would be like voting for the new California Governer. I say we hold a vote soon and get it over with. We need a name, I believe its hard to grow and market the concept to others without a set name.
-
[AsbjornUlsberg] I don't think the name is so important that we need to rush it. Also, if every name is added to this page in the same procedure as they have been (according to the ProjectNameGuidelines) until now (being trademark-cleared and discussed independantly), I think we can get a good handful of names we can chose between, which can't (most likely) be trashed afterwards because Bill Bad Bob says he owns it.
-
[AdamKinney]That's true I don't think the name is that important either. But I think having one is. With the added 21 names on the list, that now takes us up to 267 names (minus those that do not match the guidelines), I think there are plenty of usable candidates. To me, its not a product you are going to sell to a business owner, its a technology specification that developers/technologists are going to use, whatever its named. Why not just vote and get it figured out. As you mentioned I think the most important aspect is the legal strength and validity, so as long as we meet that the rest is mostly opinion, and this is such an open project that no name will ever make everybody happy.
-
[SingingBanzo] In NameFinalVote there is a date to nominations: 29 August 2003. From ProjectNameProcess: After a period of time, we can draw down to some finalists with the names that get the most support. We can then open a poll for them and also do some due diligence about whether or not they are usable. I think twentysome is not a big number to not start with the poll directly.
-
[AsbjornUlsberg] +1
-
[AdamKinney] Ok, thanks for the info SingingBanzo. Sorry to raise such a stink about it. Hopefully a concensus will be reached.
