Using Echo or any alternate spellings will create legal liability and is out of bounds. This page is an archive of some of the conversations on the topic.
[FrançoisGranger] Ekko will probably make a good choice. Easy to remember, and few collisions.
[ArveBersvendsen] I'm for Ekko, provided the similarity won't cause any legal problems. My #2 choice would be SOS. Melange is on my definite no-list, as it's a brand of margarine. And I'm opposed to any name that contains 'Blog', 'Log', or 'Weblog' -- this goes way beyond blogs.

+1 for the last part : no mention of "(we(b))log" should be made. [XavierBorderie]

[AsbjornUlsberg] +1

[TomasJogin] I prefer "Ecco". I don't think the dolphin will mind, nor the shoes.

[ShelleyPowers] Group can't afford the services of a trademark lawyer, so wouldn't the better part of valor be to not push this issue? Let's let echo fade away. It had its time, we'll remember it fondly, and years hence those in on the beginning will be able to differentiate each other by saying, hey, remember when it was called Echo?
-
[AsbjornUlsberg] Well, I agree that we can't afford any lawsuits, but do you really think the current existing Echo Java Framework-folks will have a problem with Ekko? Ok, it's the same word, but it is in another language, and spells differently. I can't see that the name Ekko will cause any problems. I really can't.

[ArveBersvendsen, RefactorOk] Before we investigate this further, wouldn't it be better to simply ask the other Echo project if they would object to "Ekko" as well?

[ArveBersvendsen, RefactorOk] On re-Googling this, I've changed my mind: as per U.S. terms, using Ekko or Ecco would be treading on legally thin ground. Victoria's Secret recently lost a similar case, where they sued a company named Victor's Little Sectret, according to Seattle Times. That, and remembering the Windows/Lindows lawsuits, any such action would no doubt have a negative impact on both this project and the other Echo.
