Also, the latest Mozilla code in CVS (in the directory extensions/xmlextras/tests/) has a very handy file called soapproxy.js which defines an object called SOAPProxy, which does bring the interface up to a somewhat higher level (see soapelements.html/soapelementsproxy.js for an example if its usage). Still not at the ActiveState level, but a lot better.
