Nonconformity

Christian Metts: By our best estimates, over 90% of the 550 people at RailsConf 2006 are using Apple laptops.

Non-conformants at the conference took two forms: leading edge (Ubuntu), and trailing edge (Windows).

Eh, I’m not sure that’s entirely accurate, I’m sure there were other distributions floating around besides Ubuntu.  Er, by which I mean maybe 1 or 2 of them.  But I think the vast majority of the non-conformists were on the trailing edge.

Sadly, I was an uncertified conformist.  Let me know when someone writes a port/rip-off of TextMate that runs on Ubuntu.  Actually... let me know when someone writes a port of ZFS for Ubuntu.

I wonder what the ratio will be next year.

Certifiable

Quick! Someone make a t-shirt for these people. It should say: “Non-conformity is the new conformity” or “zealotry is sexy again!” ("I’m with stupid"'s already been done.) Pride is such a terribly dangerous thing. And too often people confuse...

I was a railsconf nonconformist — #26 in fact — and I wasn’t using ubuntu.  I have a linux-from-scratch installation on my laptop computer, because nothing else is hard-core enough for me.

Mac: entusiasti. Win: son qui, qui son. Lin: curiosi.

Back to Ubuntu

I just completed my transition back to a Linux workstation1. My distro is Ubuntu, of course. I first tried Ubuntu about eight months ago, at my previous job, and was impressed so I stuck with it. On a side note, I am quite pleased to see how Ubuntu...

Election Results: Mac over Ubuntu in a landslide

Just before election day in the US I bought another Mac (a MacBook Pro, Core 2 Duo to be precise) after ditching my Ubuntu laptop. This goes against some of the recent migrations that smart people have been making. Mark Pilgrim moved from Mac to...
