Automating human contact

0xDECAFBAD: The irony in my life is that, with my lack of much free time, automated agents, aggregators, and weblogs have given me more personal contact with human beings than I might have been able to achieve without them.  Ditto.

In many ways, referrer logs already closed the loop.  And weblogs.com is the perfect example of a spam magnet that has not melted down yet.

By the way, if all goes according to plan, the trackback for this blog entry should happen without any human intervention.

Circle of Life

Aquarion (reflecting on RSS 0.90):

If you want to put someone elses /content/ on your site, or in your program, go ahead. That wasn't what RSS was designed for either, but what it was perverted to. ESF is designed so it can't easily be perverted. Clear, and hardly any overhead at all.

Joe Hanna (also reflecting on RSS 0.90):

I maintain that RSS is such a technology. It's designed purpose is the syndication of "news" items from individual websites to a portal website, to be more specific to the MyNetscape portal website. It was *not* designed to be of any particular use to bloggers, aggregators, or metadata providers, but it *does* serve them and others.

Dave Winer (reflecting on RSS 0.91):

Half of RSS 0.91 was scriptingNews format, which was totally designed to model a weblog in XML

Dave Winer (on RSS 2.0):

RSS is not a brilliant format. It is a compromise. It is for syndicating news feeds. That's all it is for, for the 18,000th time.

P.S.: Apologies to Disney for the title that I have assigned to this post.

Epistula Syndication Format

Nicholas Avenell: Are you also fed up with the continuing war between RSS 0.9* and 1.0 and 2.0 and whatever else they invent today? Me too. So today I invented the Epistula Syndication Format. ESF. It isn’t XML. It isn’t RDF. It’s just data. [via DiveIntoMarkI'm in.

Two weeks to DevCon East...

This was the conference that google picked for me.  And the one that I had a blast.  This one looks like it has an equally stellar lineup.  Only 24 seats left, so if you are inclined to go, act quick...

I'm kicking the thing off.  I asked Chris what he expected from a keynote.  He said, "more prose, less code".  I responded "just so long as I don't have to wear a tie.".  Chris's response: "If you do, I'll kick you out myself".  This is one conference that I'm very much looking forward to.
