once again, it's the blogging world who are getting up and actually
doing it, small piece by small piece.
I actually think the sweet spot is in comments. How I chose to
update my weblog is of an academic interest to most, but the
ability to author new content is of a much wider interest. At the
moment, the best I can say is that a given comment is purported to
be by Ben or Mark or Shelley or whoever.
But I would prefer to start this much more incrementally. The
most basic thing comments by email provide is the ability to
download various RSS feeds, hit the road, and respond while
disconnected. If you want to try this, you can do it on
this blog
entry.
The next thing people will want is the ability to specify a URL
of their homepage to be displayed instead of their e-mail address.
Much discussion will ensue as to whether this should be a MIME
header or in the body. If defacto standards emerge in this area, I
will simply support both.
Signing is the next step, particularly given that e-mail clients
already tend to have built in support for this. Ultimately, when
the spam starts arriving, only signed e-mails will be accepted.
Services are the next step. If I can validate a signature
against some data located via a link from your home page, I would
be comfortable with providing Jabber messages whenever additional
comments are made to a blog entry that you have commented on. Or on
processing signed requests to update or delete weblog entries that
you originated.
Update: I've changed the address to be blog-1172 instead
of blog:1172 so that email clients need not quote the address per
RFC 822

Sam, the problem with putting the links in a "plain" <comments> element is that it lacks additional level of indirection useful for aggregators.
Assume that you have three ways to add comments: email, HTML form, and a web service. How could an offline aggregator "know" that I'd prefer to use the email method?
I think adding a "rel" (or similar) to the <comments> element, similar to the way we put "semantic" links in HTML, would prove beneficial.
Ziv, my feeling is that you shouldn't care what I prefer, instead I should tell you what I support, and you should feel free take your pick.
If I see somebody else define and consume an RSS module for this information, I will support it. I do want it to be a module as <comment> is part of the frozen core. And I don't want this to be simply an intellectual exercise, that's whey I want to identify the consumer first.

I knew someone was going to bring that up about NewsGator. :-) Unfortunately we can't edit the "From" in Outlook, so the built-in reply functionality won't work for this. What I'm thinking about, though, is have a comment link or icon next to the existing post link on the top line of the post...with Sam's feed, it would be a mailto link, and with others, it would be a http link.
Hm, it'd be interesting to add these addresses to the RSS feeds, my <a
href="http://www.w3.org/2002/09/rss2email/">email-based RSS
aggregator</a> could then use them to set the From address so that
email replies would show up properly.

I've checked-in a slight update to Aggie that harvests your item/comments elements and renders them as a link allowing readers to send back comments via email.
I promise to add support in Aggie for whatever module we could agree upon for sending back comments, as long it could be done from a browser (as Aggie relies on IE HTML rendering)
Adding comments via email is very smart. Implementing readers that
recognize the <comments> tag and possibly support a smarter <textinput>
that would give readers the info needed to create a dialog for inputs
would also improve the experience.

Ok, seriously... this is actually the fourth spam item I got... I quickly removed the first three. The first I am convinced was simply an attempt to prove it can be done. The second I'm not so sure of. The third and fourth are clearly spam.
I've not yet received any spam on any other blog entry even though they are all e-mail enabled.
I could require signing... but something I might do first is pre-fill in the subject line and require it to be unmodified and see if that cuts down on things.

Subject information is actually part of what inspired the current rewrite... it would be nice to have a real templating engine so that I can easily add things like url encoded subjects.
At the same time will be better formatting of e-mail (respecting paragraph breaks for starters).
Using pine as an agregator - with a modified blagg that
sends HTML mail, writes the right date and subject/sender
based on info from the rdf.
All links are visible - including the mailto:, so I just
clicked on the link and got into the composer.
I think it is possible to include more info to the mailto: link
( subject, etc ).
If you include the feedback email into the RDF in a nice way - I could
turn this into a "reply to" field.
