It’s just data

Simon's trackback enabled

Simon Fell: If everything went according to plan, the archive pages are now trackback enbabled. Now that he fixed the typo on dc:identifier, he should get two trackbacks from this entry.

Hmmm... instead of trackbacks, what I got back was:

<html><head></head><body>to do !</body></html>

Perhaps this is because I issue HTTP GET requests when I encounter a trackback URL with a "?" in it in order to support old (Trackback 1.0) clients?

Yeah, I'm currently requiring it to be a POST to do a trackback. Perhaps i should treat a GET with an url parameters as a trackback as well.

I changed my logic to only do a GET for URLs which contain the string "?tb_id=", and issued the trackbacks that you would have gotten on this and the previous post.

Ultimately, I'll remove support for HTTP GET entirely.

One final observation: it doesn't look like you make any use of the blog_name value I send you.

Posted by Sam Ruby at

Cool, thanks. I'm recording blog_name, just need to tweak the display scripts to use it.

fixed, now shows blog_name if i get one. http://www.pocketsoap.com/services/pingback.aspx

Ah, now it shows blog_name INSTEAD OF title.

Posted by Sam Ruby at

This seems to be the same as what you're doing, no ?

Posted by Simon Fell at

Simon - depending on the view, I guess you are right. Most of the time, I'm viewing my comments only, so I see the title too. I need to think about this a bit more.

Posted by Sam Ruby at

I reworked it a bit more, it'll show both the title & blogname for trackbacks now.

Sam, Simon,

Thanks for doing this. I have "installed" Simon's pingback root pieces. I'm sorry I can't figure out what next to do. Can someone please help me in what else I have to do to my Radio templates or what not to have pingback/trackback working? Thanks!

Sam: try making a post to your weblog referencing something on either Simon's or my weblogs.

Way cool! Now to show Pingbacks from my articles/posts, do I code an HTML page to show them or something? Are there any directions? I'm sorry for the silly questions but I don't know anything about this area-)

SamG: Unfortunately, I believe that for that you will need a pingback server.

Posted by Sam Ruby at

Yeah, and here's where static implementations such as Radio start to fall apart. As weblogging becomes more and more dynamic with things like trackbacks and pingbacks, the more weblog software is going to need to render dynamic content.

I like the idea of a public pingback server, but I haven't heard anything on the UserLand front as to whether or not they plan to implement this. Perhaps I should start a thread in their forums requesting this feature.

FYI, I made an inquiry as to what UserLand plans to do for PingBack/TrackBack. If you want to follow the thread, here's the link:
